FAQ - For Owners & Breeders


Q1. I would like to have access to my own pets records so that I can view & update details whenever required. How can I do this?

Answer: In order to create an account on the Central Animal Records database you will need your pet’s microchip number to register. You also have to make sure that we have your current mobile number listed with us. We will be sending you a one-time password to this registered mobile number in order to verify your details.

To create a new account please follow these steps:

  1. Click HERE to setup a new account and complete the registration form.
  2. We will then send you an email in order to verify your email address. Please click the link on the email to get redirected back to your access page.
  3. On the landing page, Click access type ‘Owner” and click next. Enter your pets Microchip number, your full name and click Submit. Once you press the submit button we will send a one-time password to the registered mobile number on your record.
  4. Please enter this password on the one-time password page to gain access to your record.
  5. You can change your password at any time by clicking on the Settings tab when you are logged in.

Q2. How do I update the contact details for my pet’s microchip record when I have moved house or changed numbers?

Answer: If any of your details need editing and you have a log-in access to the Central Animal Records website, you can do this yourself by logging in HERE. Please note, you will have to click the 'Forgot your password' link to reset your password if this is the first time you are logging into our new portal.

Q3. I need to notify you that I’m now the new owner of a microchipped pet listed on your database. How do I do that?

Answer: There are three methods for submitting a Change of Ownership request to Central Animal Records:

  1. Central Animal Records is excited to announce the New On-line Change of Animal Ownership feature which can now be done in real time. You can now transfer ownership of an animal either into or out of your name. So, if you are currently listed as the owner of the animal on Central Animal Records and wish to transfer ownership to a different person or you have recently acquire an animal that is listed on Central Animal Records and want to transfer he or she into your name, then you can do this on-line by logging into your account HERE.
    If you don’t already have an online account with Central Animal Records have an authorised login already in place you need to create an account by clicking HERE. PLEASE NOTE: We offer a discounted transfer rate of $10.00 when the transfer of ownership is done online.
  2. If you received a Certificate of Identification , please complete the Change of Ownership section on the reverse of that Certificate and forward the entire document back to the address shown on the form.
  3. Alternatively, you can download a copy of the Change of Ownership form HERE Note: Once completed this form requires to be printed and signed by both previous and new owner/s before being sent back to Central Animal Records for processing. If the previous owner/s has not signed this form, the transfer could take up to 23 days as we are legally required to contact the previous owner/s for consent to transfer ownership. 

If submitting a paper form, a payment of $15.00 including GST must accompany all documents requesting an ownership change. Changes will not be processed until payment is received and cleared along with the appropriate documentation.


Q4. What To DO If Your Pet Is Stolen?

Answer: A microchip can be irrefutable proof of ownership of your pet but we realise that it does not guarantee that your pet will be returned if stolen. We are committed to helping you recover your pet in such distressing circumstances but we are limited in what we can do. If you notify us as soon as possible, we will put a STOLEN "flag" on your pet's record that will immediately alert our staff or any other authorised user searching your pet's microchip number on the CAR registry in the event that your pet has been found or brought into their vet clinic, animal welfare shelter or pound. You can even do this yourself if you have an authorised log-in to the Central Animal Registry website.

There are other things that we would strongly advise you to do if you have had your pet stolen including the filing of a Police Report as early as possible. We also strongly advise all vet clinics that they should scan any new pets being presented to their clinic to check the microchip is present and functional and to verify the owner details for that microchip.

Q5. I want to update my contact details, but don’t know if my pet is even listed on your Registry. How can I find out?

 Answer: There are 7 Australian animal microchip registries but you can go to Pet Address (www.petaddress.com.au) which is an independent site linked to all of the animal microchip registries and has the ability to search them and advise you on which registry your pet is registered and give you links to that registry.

 Alternatively, if you want to check if your pet is listed with Central Animal Records, simply type the microchip number into the “Microchip Search” field on the Central Animal Records website. If your pet is listed on our Register, you will receive a confirmation message. If it is not listed with us, a different message will display along with links to the other Australian animal microchip registries so that you can contact them directly.

Q6. I don’t know my pets microchip number. How can I find that out?

Answer: A microchip number is a definite link to your details, however if you don’t know the number, we can search our database using other criteria, such as name, address, phone numbers or email addresses. You can send your request to info@car.com.au or phone the office during business hours on (03) 9706 3187.

If we do not have a listing matching the information you provide, you will need to make arrangements to have the pet scanned at your local Veterinary Hospital to obtain the number.  A fee may apply for this service.
Once you know the microchip number, you can go toPet Address at www.petaddress.com.au which is an independent site linked to the 7 Australian animal microchip registries, and will advise you which registry has your pets' chip listed, so that you can contact them directly in regard to any updates that you may wish to make.

Q7. I found out that my pets microchip isn’t even listed on a database, so how do I rectify that?

Answer: It is not uncommon for pets to be microchipped and not listed on a National database.      

The reasons for this are varied, but the most common are that the animal was imported from overseas, or it was chipped in NSW where they are not required to be listed Nationally. When people move out of NSW however, they find that their beloved pet is no longer protected via its microchip implant, as the NSW database caters for NSW only. This is easily rectified, but does require lodgement with us of a specific subscription form, & a small “one off” payment.  
Simply email your request to info@car.com.au  to have the appropriate document & “how to” details emailed back to you. Simply explain that you wish to have your pets microchip listed on our Register, ensuring that you quote your pets microchip number/s.  



Q8. I a filling out a change of ownership form and it is asking for a CAR tag, what is this?

Answer: A CAR tag is a green or blue collar tag with a unique number that assists with recoveries for pets. If you were not given a tag by the previous owner or the breeder, you can leave this section blank on the form. You are more than welcome to purchase a CAR tag at a later date for $8.00.



Q9. I need to transfer an animal into my name but I don't know who the previous owner is, how do I proceed?

Answer: If you are transferring a microchip using our form and are either not in contact with the previous owner or do not know who they are, you can leave this section blank. We will contact the listed owner ourselves with the details we have on the record and seek their approval.
